A good mind is an asset to human life; good company brings every kind of honour and distinction.

HOW TO CHOOSE AND EVALUATE YOUR FRIENDSHIPS?

A Psychological Perspective on Friendship, Emotional Well-being and Personal Growth.

Have you ever stopped to think about the quality of the friendships in your life?

We all have friends. Some have been with us for decades, some entered our lives recently, and some are simply people we meet regularly.

But here is an interesting question:

Are all the people we call friends actually good friends?

Does knowing someone for twenty years automatically make that person a valuable friend?

Not necessarily!

Friendship is not measured by the number of years you have known someone. It is measured by how that relationship makes you feel and how it contributes to your life.

No human relationship can offer 100% satisfaction. Differences of opinion, misunderstandings and occasional disappointments are natural.

However, a meaningful friendship should bring warmth, comfort, happiness and growth into our lives.

Here are eight simple ways to understand and evaluate your friendships.

1. Does This Friendship Make You Feel Good?

A good friendship should provide at least 60% to 90% positive emotional experiences.

Expecting 100% satisfaction from any human relationship is unrealistic. Even the closest friends can disagree, misunderstand each other or occasionally disappoint us.

What really matters is the overall experience.

Do you feel respected and valued when you are with this person?

Can you speak freely without worrying about being judged?

Do you genuinely enjoy their company?

If the answer is mostly yes, you probably have something worth appreciating.

Remember, the emotional warmth of a friendship matters more than its duration.

2. What Does This Friendship Add to Your Life?

A good friend does not necessarily have to give you money, gifts or material benefits.

But the friendship should enrich your life in some meaningful way.

Perhaps your friend gives you valuable advice or introduces you to new ideas.

Perhaps they make you laugh when you are feeling low.

Perhaps they offer timely help when you need it most.

Or perhaps they simply listen patiently when you want to share your happiness, disappointments, successes and failures.

Sometimes, having someone with whom you can speak openly is itself a wonderful gift.

A friendship does not have to provide everything. Even one or two meaningful qualities can make it valuable.

3. Can You Trust This Person?

A person's character is revealed not merely through their words but through their behaviour.

Is your friend honest? Are they consistent? Do they respect your feelings and commitments?

Here is another important question.

If you share something personal or confidential with this person, can you trust them to keep it private?

We all need someone with whom we can share certain things without worrying that they will become tomorrow's gossip!

A trustworthy friend does not use your weaknesses, secrets or difficult situations against you.

Trust is not built through promises. It is built through consistent actions.

4. How Do You Feel After Meeting This Friend?

Here is a simple test that you can try.

Imagine meeting a friend and returning home afterwards.

How do you feel?

Are you happy, relaxed and refreshed? Do you wish you had spent a little more time together?

Or do you feel mentally exhausted and wonder why you agreed to meet in the first place?

A healthy friendship should generally leave you feeling emotionally comfortable and positive.

Of course, listening to a friend's problems can sometimes be tiring. That is part of caring for someone.

But if almost every meeting leaves you emotionally drained, perhaps it is time to think about the nature of that relationship.

A good friendship should add energy to your life, not constantly take it away.

5. Can You Disagree Without Losing Respect?

Do you expect your friends to agree with everything you say?

That would be rather unrealistic, wouldn't it?

Friends can have completely different opinions about politics, society, religion, lifestyle and many other subjects.

A good friend does not have to think exactly like you.

What matters is whether both of you can respect each other's differences.

You can disagree without insulting each other. You can question an opinion without questioning someone's worth.

Mutual respect is one of the strongest foundations of lasting friendship.

6. Is Your Friendship Mutual or One-Sided?

Think about this for a moment.

Who usually makes the first phone call?

Who suggests meeting?

Who offers help?

Who listens when the other person has a problem?

If you are always the one making an effort, perhaps something is missing.

Friendship should not become a responsibility carried by only one person.

This does not mean both friends must contribute equally every day. Life circumstances change, and sometimes one person needs more support than the other.

But over time, affection, care and effort should flow in both directions.

Friendship is not a competition or comparison, but it should not be a one-person performance either!

7. Can You Be Yourself Around This Person?

This is perhaps one of the most beautiful qualities of friendship.

With some people, we constantly try to impress. We carefully choose our words, hide our failures and sometimes pretend to be happier or more successful than we really are.

But with a genuine friend, why should we pretend?

You should feel comfortable sharing your achievements as well as your disappointments.

You should be able to admit your mistakes without fearing humiliation.

A good friend accepts your individuality while being honest enough to point out your mistakes.

The freedom to be yourself is one of the greatest gifts a friendship can offer.

8. Is Your Friendship Helping You Grow?

This is particularly important.

Your personal growth is significantly influenced by the quality of friendships you maintain.

The people with whom you spend considerable time can influence your thinking, habits, ambitions, confidence and approach to life.

Do your friends encourage you to learn new things?

Do they inspire you to improve yourself?

Can you have meaningful conversations that broaden your understanding?

Do they encourage you to pursue your goals rather than discourage your efforts?

The right company can introduce you to new possibilities and help you see life from different perspectives.

On the other hand, constantly surrounding yourself with negativity, unnecessary criticism and unproductive conversations may limit your growth.

You do not have to associate only with highly educated, successful or wealthy people. Yet, Wisdom, kindness or good character shall be found in people you choose as your friend.

Choose friends who encourage you to become a better human being.

The quality of your company can influence the direction of your life.

A Timeless Thought from Thiruvalluvar

More than 2,000 years ago, the great Tamil philosopher Thiruvalluvar expressed a profound thought about the importance of mental well-being and the company we keep.

Thirukkural – 457

English Meaning:

A good mind is an asset to human life; good company brings every kind of honour and distinction.

Thiruvalluvar beautifully connects the quality of one's mind with the quality of the people one associates with.

His wisdom remains remarkably relevant even today.

A Final Thought – How Many True Friends Do You Really Have?

If someone asks you how many friends you have, you might proudly say fifty, a hundred or even more.

But here is a different question.

How many of them can you call when you are genuinely upset?

How many will sincerely celebrate your success without jealousy?

How many can you trust with your personal thoughts?

How many will encourage you when you are struggling?

Take a moment to think about it.

You do not necessarily need hundreds of friends. A handful of genuine friendships can bring enormous happiness and meaning to your life.

At the same time, do not judge every friendship by the same standard. People have different personalities, responsibilities and circumstances.

Appreciate those who genuinely care about you. Grow together with those who inspire you. And learn to maintain healthy boundaries in relationships that repeatedly disturb your peace of mind.

Remember:

A good friendship should make your heart feel warm, your mind feel comfortable and your life feel happier.

Does your circle of friends give you these feelings?

Perhaps it is time to take a closer look!

The Growth of Artificial Intelligence and the Decline of Human Civilisation.

Humanity Is Reaching Outer Space, Yet Struggling to Find a Place to Live on Earth!

Humanity is moving towards the peak of scientific and technological advancement. Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, digital technology and space exploration are transforming the world at an unprecedented pace. The achievements of human intelligence are truly astonishing.

Tasks that once required years of human effort can now be completed by AI within minutes. Productivity is increasing. Factories are becoming increasingly automated. Millions of new technological products are being manufactured across the world.

But amidst this extraordinary progress, an important question arises:

Is scientific progress truly improving human life, or are we merely increasing our technological capabilities?

These two things are not necessarily the same. This is something we must understand.

Production Is Increasing, But People's Purchasing Power May Be Declining!

Imagine a factory that previously employed 1,000 workers. With the help of AI and automation, it can now accomplish the same work with just 100 employees.

Production costs decrease. Corporate profits increase. Production capacity expands.

But what happens to the remaining 900 workers?

If they lose their jobs and income, how will they afford to purchase the very products that the factory manufactures?

This is one of the greatest contradictions of the modern economy.

Millions of electronic devices, electrical appliances, plastic products and automobiles may be manufactured across the world. But people must have sufficient purchasing power to buy them.

Money may exist as a piece of paper or as a digital number on a screen. However, real wealth consists of food, water, land, housing and natural resources that sustain human life.

A person cannot survive merely because they possess money if food is unavailable. Similarly, what is the purpose of increased production if people do not have the purchasing power to buy what is produced?

Survival-Based Economy
vs
Consumption-Based Economy

To understand this problem, we need to examine two different economic approaches.

1. Survival-Based Economy

2. Consumption-Based Economy

A Survival-Based Economy prioritises the fundamental requirements of human life. A Consumption-Based Economy focuses on continuously producing more goods and creating new consumer demands.

Survival-Based Economy| Consumption-Based Economy
Food| Electronic products
Water| New gadgets
Agriculture| Excessive production
Conservation of natural resources| Consumption of resources
Essential needs| Continuously expanding consumption
Food security| Market expansion
Human survival| Growth in product sales

This does not mean that all consumer products are unnecessary. Technology that improves human life is certainly essential.

However, there must be a balance between producing what humanity genuinely needs and manufacturing excessive quantities of goods merely to sustain consumption.

When a person has no food, a new smartphone is of little use. When drinking water is unavailable, expensive electronic gadgets cannot quench human thirst.

Therefore, the first priority of any human economic system should be survival. Luxury and excessive consumption should come afterwards.

From Agriculture to Artificial Consumption!

Natural agriculture fulfils one of humanity's most fundamental needs.

A farmer cultivates paddy. It is harvested and processed into rice. Rice becomes food. Food sustains human life.

However, the modern economy continuously manufactures new products and creates new consumer demands.

Every year, we see new smartphones, televisions, automobiles and electronic gadgets entering the market.

There is no doubt that many of these products contribute significantly to human progress. Technology has brought enormous benefits to medicine, education, agriculture and transportation.

However, excessive production, exploitation of natural resources, plastic pollution and electronic waste are creating new environmental challenges.

There is a fundamental difference between producing goods to fulfil human needs and transforming human beings into consumers whose primary purpose is to sustain production.

Even in Scientifically Advanced America, People Are Living in Cars!

Even in the United States, one of the world's largest and wealthiest economies, hundreds of thousands of people are experiencing homelessness.

Some families are forced to live inside small cars because they cannot afford proper housing.

A car is designed for transportation. But for these unfortunate families, it becomes a bedroom, a kitchen, a storage space and sometimes their only shelter.

They are exposed to heat, rain and extreme cold while struggling to live within the limited space of a vehicle.

Humanity is exploring outer space. It is developing artificial intelligence. It is constructing skyscrapers that reach towards the sky. Yet the same civilisation struggles to guarantee a safe home for every human being.

Humanity has reached outer space, yet struggles to find even a few square feet of space to live on Earth!

This is one of the greatest contradictions of modern civilisation.

Concentration of Wealth and Economic Inequality!

There is a growing concern that wealth may become increasingly concentrated in the hands of a relatively small section of society.

If the profits generated by artificial intelligence and automation primarily benefit those who control technology and capital, economic inequality could become even more severe.

This raises two important questions:

Who receives the benefits of scientific progress?

And who bears the consequences of technological advancement in the form of unemployment and loss of income?

On one side, technology companies may experience enormous increases in profits. On the other, ordinary people may struggle to secure employment, housing, food and healthcare.

This is not an inevitable future. However, without appropriate economic policies and social protection systems, it is a serious possibility.

Is Science for Humanity, or Is Humanity Becoming a Servant of Science?

Scientific advancement was originally intended to make human life easier and better.

Machines should reduce physical labour. Artificial intelligence should assist human intellectual activities. Technology should provide people with more leisure time, opportunities to spend time with their families and a healthier quality of life.

However, when technological advancement reduces employment opportunities and leaves people without sufficient income, we must reconsider the very purpose of that advancement.

If AI increases production in the future, the benefits should be shared across society.

Universal access to basic income, food security, affordable housing, quality education and healthcare should become the priorities of humanity.

The true progress of human civilisation cannot be measured merely by the number of products manufactured. It must be measured by the quality of human life.

Once, humanity struggled against the challenges of nature. Today, we proudly celebrate scientific advancements that enable us to overcome many of those challenges.

But if the benefits of scientific progress cannot be enjoyed by everyone, what is the real social value of such progress?

Technology created by human beings must improve human life. It must never become a system that leaves people unemployed, without income and without a safe place to live.

Humanity created technology; technology must never become the master of humanity.

Let us remember one fundamental truth:

Rather than celebrating scientific achievements that promise to establish human settlements in outer space, the true mark of an advanced civilisation is its ability to guarantee food, clothing and shelter for every human being living on this planet!

2016-ஆம் ஆண்டு Psychophysiology என்ற ஆய்விதழில் வெளியான 'Effects of Meditation Practice on Spontaneous Eye Blink Rate' என்ற ஆய்வு குறிப்பாகக் கவனிக்கத்தக்கது.

EEG (Electroencephalography)

EOG (Electrooculography)

El Niño: The Direct Fallouts of Human Greed!

This includes the Explanation of the Greenhouse Effect:

At the dawn of human civilization, the relationship between man and Earth was deeply harmonious. Humans utilized nature solely to satisfy their basic needs. However, over time, as human needs transformed into insatiable greed, the delicate balance of nature was disrupted.

Today, the climate crisis threatening the globe manifests through phenomena like 'El Niño' and the 'Greenhouse Effect'.

The driving force behind their current intensity is not the wrath of nature, but the unyielding greed of humanity. This essay explores how these two forces intertwine to pose a severe threat to our world, backed by scientific data.

1. El Niño: Nature’s Neutral Cycle

The term 'El Niño' literally translates to 'The Little Boy' or 'The Christ Child' in Spanish. It was named by Peruvian fishermen in South America who noticed an unusual warming of the Pacific Ocean's surface waters around Christmas time.

Scientifically, El Niño is a natural climate pattern that occurs every 2 to 7 years and typically lasts for 9 to 12 months. In normal years, strong trade winds push warm surface water westward toward Asia. However, due to atmospheric pressure changes, these winds weaken, causing the warm water to slacken and spread across the central and eastern Pacific Ocean.

Naturally speaking, this 'old troublemaker' (natural El Niño) is only a temporary disrupter, directly impacting about 25% of global weather. While it brings severe droughts to some regions, it is inevitably followed by its counterpart, 'La Niña', which brings cooling rains to restore balance.

Therefore, rather than viewing it as a villain, it is more accurate to define El Niño as a Neutral and essential component of Earth's natural thermostat.

2. The Greenhouse Effect: The Embodiment of Human Greed 🥺🥺

While El Niño is a natural cycle, the 'Greenhouse Effect' is a modern, man-made crisis manufactured over the last 150 years. This phenomenon can be easily understood through three everyday analogies:

• The Closed Car Analogy: If you park a car under the sun with all its windows rolled up, the interior becomes stiflingly hot. The sun's light enters easily, but the heat radiated back by the seats and dashboard gets trapped by the glass windows. Similarly, the Earth’s atmosphere acts like car windows, trapping the heat that should escape into space.

• The Extra Blanket Analogy: Wrapping yourself in a single blanket during winter feels cozy (representing Earth's natural carbon levels). However, by pumping industrial and vehicular smoke into the air, humans have stacked four heavy blankets over the planet. Earth is now overheating and suffocating. The planet's way of screaming is the sudden onset of mega-storms and flash floods.

• The Excess Sugar Analogy: A teaspoon of sugar makes a cup of tea taste wonderful. But dumping three-quarters of a cup of sugar into it renders the tea undrinkable. Although Nitrogen (78%) and Oxygen (21%) make up 99% of our atmosphere, it is the less than 1% of trace gases, like Carbon Dioxide, that dictate global temperature. Humans have altered this crucial percentage, ruining the planetary balance.

The Crucial Statistic (Data): Before the Industrial Revolution (circa 1750), the atmospheric concentration of Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) was stable at 280 ppm (Parts Per Million). Driven by human greed, it has plummeted past 420 ppm today. This means humans have increased atmospheric carbon by 50%, fundamentally altering our air. This artificial threat has no redeeming qualities; it is more than 75% responsible for the climate chaos we see today.

3. A Deadly Combo: When Two Troublemakers Unite

Imagine a local street thug (natural El Niño) operating in a neighborhood, and suddenly, a powerful international gangster (the man-made Greenhouse Effect) joins hands with him. The neighborhood turns into a warzone. This is exactly what is happening to Earth.

According to scientific observations, because human activities have already warmed the global oceans, El Niño receives a massive surge of baseline energy when it triggers. Studies analyzing ancient coral reefs show that the intensity of El Niño has risen by 36% compared to pre-industrial times.

When these two forces combine, they unleash unpredictable extreme weather events. Regions prone to dry spells experience unprecedented droughts, while regions expecting normal rainfall face catastrophic deluges. A prime example is Tamil Nadu, India, where extreme El Niño years like 2015 and 2023 triggered historic, record-breaking cloudbursts and flooding in Chennai and southern districts, causing losses worth billions of rupees.

4. The Industrial Revolution and the Illusion of the 'Ant'

Looking at the vastness of the Earth, oceans, and skies, it is easy to adopt the perspective that humans are merely 'ants' incapable of altering such a grand scale. One might ask, "If ants take a bath, will the ocean turn dirty?"

However, the crisis lies not in physical footprint but in the concentration of toxic gases. Just as a tiny 200-milligram cyanide pill (0.0003% of body weight) can kill a 70-kilogram human, a small shift in carbon concentration can disrupt the entire planet. Furthermore, there are now over 8.4 billion 'human ants' on Earth, collectively dumping billions of tons of pollution into the atmosphere daily, outstripping the planet's capacity to cleanse itself.

Before the Industrial Revolution in Europe, traditional self-sufficient village agriculture and cottage industries generated negligible waste. Production was tethered to 'need'. The dawn of heavy machinery transformed 'need' into 'greed'—prioritizing massive scaling and corporate profit. This reliance on fossil fuels spread globally like a contagion. The true name of this planetary sickness is human greed, and modern, amplified El Niño events are merely a symptom.

5. The Current Planetary Crisis

Official data from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) paint a grim picture of our current trajectory:

• Record-Breaking Heat: The WMO confirms that the decade spanning 2015 to 2025 represents the warmest period in recorded human history [Image 2, Image 5]. The year 2024 stood out as the hottest year on record, with subsequent years continually breaking regional heat records.

• Breaching the Threshold: Under the Paris Agreement, global nations set a 'Lakshman Rekha' (a strict boundary) to limit warming to 1.5°C. However, according to the UNEP Emissions Gap Report, our failure to cut emissions effectively means breaching this 1.5°C safety limit has become practically unavoidable.

• Accelerating Ice Melt: Driven by artificial atmospheric warming, polar ice sheets are melting four times faster than in previous decades. Consequently, the global sea-level rise has doubled to an alarming rate of 4.5 mm per year, posing a permanent flooding threat to coastal metropolises like Chennai.
While social media channels often distort these facts into sensationalized clickbait for views, the empirical data held by scientists points to a real, systemic danger that demands immediate global action.

In summary, the modern version of
'El Niño'—amplified and erratic—is simply another name for 'human greed'. While the natural cycle acts as a temporary fever (25% impact), human greed has inflicted a chronic, long-term disease (75% impact) upon the planet.

To safeguard the Earth from this impending collapse, humanity must curb its insatiable consumption. We must transition back toward sustainable living practices and accelerate the shift toward clean alternatives like solar energy and electric vehicles (EVs). Failing to dismantle this deadly alliance between natural cycles and human greed will ultimately pave the way for our own extinction.

EL NIÑO: THE TRUTH AND MYTHS ABOUT THE WARMING OCEAN

Understanding the Science Without Fear or Exaggeration

Introduction: Is El Niño Really a Monster?

Whenever a major weather phenomenon enters public discussion, alarming headlines often follow. We hear warnings about unbearable heat, severe droughts, devastating floods, food shortages and unprecedented disasters. In recent times, El Niño has increasingly become a subject of such discussions.

But what exactly is El Niño? Is it a new threat created by modern civilisation? Is it a mysterious force that suddenly appears to disturb the Earth's climate? Will it make the oceans rise dramatically and submerge entire countries? Or is it a natural phenomenon that deserves scientific understanding rather than unnecessary fear?

The truth lies in understanding the difference between a genuine scientific warning and an exaggerated interpretation of that warning.

El Niño is real. Its effects can be serious. Yet, understanding what it is—and what it is not—helps us respond with reason, preparedness and confidence rather than panic.

1. El Niño Is Not a New Discovery of Nature

El Niño did not begin with modern science, industrialisation or the invention of weather satellites. It is a naturally occurring climate phenomenon that has existed for a very long time.

Long before meteorologists developed sophisticated instruments, fishermen along the coast of Peru observed changes in ocean currents and fish availability. They noticed that unusually warm water sometimes appeared around the Christmas season. The Spanish expression El Niño, meaning “the boy” or referring to the Christ Child, became associated with this phenomenon.

Modern scientific research eventually revealed that El Niño was not merely a local change in coastal waters. It was part of a much larger interaction between the tropical Pacific Ocean and the atmosphere.

Evidence preserved in coral, sediments, tree rings and other natural records indicates that El Niño-like events occurred long before humans began documenting them scientifically.

Therefore, it is incorrect to assume that El Niño is a new phenomenon that has suddenly emerged in our modern age. What has changed is our ability to observe it, measure it, forecast it and communicate its potential consequences.

2. What Exactly Is El Niño?

Let us understand it in simple terms.

The Sun supplies energy to the Earth. The oceans absorb and store much of this energy, while the atmosphere transports heat and moisture around the planet. Ocean currents, winds, air pressure and rainfall patterns continuously interact.

Under normal conditions, trade winds generally blow from east to west across the equatorial Pacific. They help push warm surface water towards Indonesia and Australia, while cooler water rises towards the surface in parts of the eastern Pacific.

During El Niño, these trade winds weaken or change, allowing warm surface water to spread farther eastwards. The temperature of the central and eastern equatorial Pacific rises above its usual level, and the atmospheric circulation changes in response.

These changes reinforce one another through a process known as ocean–atmosphere coupling.

In simple language, El Niño is not a storm, a fire, an earthquake or a giant wave. It is a natural climate pattern involving changes in ocean temperatures, winds and atmospheric circulation.

A seemingly small change in ocean temperature can influence rainfall and weather over distant regions. This is why scientists monitor the phenomenon carefully.

3. Does El Niño Mean That the Entire Ocean Is Becoming Extremely Hot?

No. This is an important distinction.

Scientists do not determine El Niño merely by measuring the temperature of the entire ocean. They monitor particular regions of the equatorial Pacific and compare their sea-surface temperatures with the long-term average for those regions.

For example, a temperature anomaly of +1°C means that the water is one degree Celsius warmer than the relevant average. It does not mean that the water itself is only 1°C or that the entire Pacific Ocean has warmed by that amount.

The Niño 3.4 region is one of the important areas used to monitor El Niño. A sustained rise in temperature, accompanied by the appropriate atmospheric changes, helps scientists identify the event.

Some strong El Niño episodes have produced temperature anomalies exceeding +2°C in this region. Such changes can have significant consequences for global weather patterns.

However, a rise of two or three degrees above the local average in a particular region must not be confused with a rise of two or three degrees across every ocean on Earth.

Precision in language matters. Misunderstanding a scientific measurement can turn a genuine warning into an unnecessarily frightening story.

4. Is El Niño Responsible for Every Climate Disaster?

No. El Niño can influence the probability and severity of certain weather conditions, but it does not determine every weather event.

In some regions, El Niño is associated with reduced rainfall and increased drought risk. In other regions, it can bring heavier rainfall and flooding. Its effects vary according to geography, season and the wider climate system.

For example, parts of Indonesia and Australia have experienced drought and increased wildfire risk during past El Niño episodes. Peru and Ecuador have experienced severe rainfall and flooding during some events. Other regions have faced agricultural losses or water shortages.

These examples demonstrate that El Niño can have serious consequences. They do not establish that every El Niño produces identical disasters everywhere.

Nor does El Niño mean that every country will experience record-breaking temperatures, that every monsoon will fail or that every river will dry up.

Weather is influenced by several interacting factors. El Niño is one important factor among them, and its influence differs from place to place.

The responsible approach is to examine regional forecasts and actual observations rather than assume that a single global phenomenon will produce the same outcome everywhere.

5. El Niño and Global Warming Are Not the Same

One of the most important distinctions in this discussion is the difference between El Niño and global warming.

Global warming refers to the long-term increase in the Earth's average temperature, primarily caused by human activities that increase greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Burning coal, oil and natural gas releases carbon dioxide. Deforestation and other human activities also influence the climate system. The oceans absorb much of the excess heat accumulating in the Earth system, contributing to long-term ocean warming and sea-level rise.

El Niño, by contrast, is a naturally occurring climate pattern involving the interaction of the Pacific Ocean and the atmosphere.

The two phenomena are different, although they can influence one another's consequences.

El Niño existed long before industrial civilisation. It is therefore inaccurate to claim that modern industrial activity originally created El Niño.

At the same time, it would be equally inaccurate to dismiss human influence on the present climate. Human-caused global warming is well established, and it changes the background conditions under which natural climate events occur.

Scientists continue to investigate how global warming affects the characteristics and impacts of individual El Niño events. There is no single percentage that can reliably describe human responsibility for every event.

We must be willing to recognise both natural variability and human influence without confusing the two.

6. Will El Niño Raise Sea Levels by Ten or Twenty Feet?

Another common source of anxiety is the fear that warming oceans will suddenly rise and submerge the world.

El Niño can temporarily redistribute warm water across parts of the Pacific, causing regional sea levels to rise in some places and fall in others. It does not, by itself, cause the global sea level to rise by ten or twenty feet.

Long-term global sea-level rise is driven mainly by two processes: the expansion of seawater as it warms and the melting of land-based glaciers and ice sheets.

These changes occur over much longer periods. Low-lying islands and coastal communities can face serious risks from rising sea levels, coastal erosion and flooding. Those risks deserve attention and practical action.

However, it is scientifically misleading to present El Niño as an enormous wave that will suddenly engulf the planet.

Understanding the difference between temporary regional sea-level changes and long-term global sea-level rise helps us distinguish a genuine environmental challenge from an exaggerated disaster narrative.

7. Is the Current El Niño a Reason for Concern?

Yes, it deserves attention—but attention is not the same as panic.

As of October 2026, the World Meteorological Organization and the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have reported that El Niño is strengthening and could become exceptionally strong during late 2026. Forecasts indicate an increased risk of unusual temperature and rainfall patterns in different parts of the world.

These are serious scientific assessments, not reasons to dismiss the event.

However, a forecast of a very strong El Niño does not mean that every predicted impact will occur, or that every country will experience a catastrophe. The actual consequences will depend on regional climate conditions, the timing and intensity of the event, and other environmental factors.

Scientists use forecasts to help governments, farmers, water managers, health services and communities prepare in advance.

That is the real value of climate forecasting: not to frighten people, but to give them time to make informed decisions.

The sensible response is to follow reliable weather advisories, conserve water where necessary, prepare for heat, and take appropriate precautions against floods or other locally relevant hazards.

Preparedness is a sign of wisdom, not fear.

8. Why We Need Scientific Understanding, Not Sensationalism

In the age of social media, a complex scientific event can quickly become a frightening headline. Words such as “unprecedented,” “historic,” “catastrophic” and “once in a century” attract attention, but they must be supported by evidence and clearly defined measurements.

An event may be exceptionally strong according to a particular ocean-temperature index without producing unprecedented damage in every country.

Similarly, a serious forecast should not be dismissed simply because some media coverage is exaggerated.

We need to ask sensible questions:

- What does the official scientific forecast actually say?
- Which region is expected to be affected?
- Is the statement about an observed condition or a future prediction?
- What is the probability of the predicted outcome?
- Does the evidence support the dramatic headline?

These questions do not weaken science. They strengthen public understanding of it.

We should neither blindly believe every alarming headline nor reject established scientific evidence because it sounds frightening.

The goal is to replace confusion with knowledge.

Conclusion: Respect Nature, Understand Science, Live Without Panic

El Niño is neither a newly invented threat nor a supernatural force. It is a natural climate phenomenon that scientists have studied for decades and that has occurred throughout human history.

Its effects can be serious. Droughts, floods, agricultural losses and extreme heat are real risks in some regions. At the same time, El Niño does not mean that the entire world will be submerged, that every country will experience the same disaster, or that the phenomenon itself was created by modern civilisation.

We must also recognise the separate and well-established problem of human-caused global warming. Protecting the environment, reducing greenhouse-gas emissions and preparing for extreme weather are responsibilities that deserve sustained attention.

The right response to El Niño is neither blind fear nor careless dismissal. It is informed awareness, responsible preparation and confidence in our ability to respond to challenges.

Nature has always contained variations that humans must learn to understand. Scientific progress allows us to observe those variations more clearly and anticipate many of their consequences.

Let us therefore choose knowledge over rumours, preparedness over panic, and reason over exaggeration.

El Niño deserves our attention, not our helplessness.

Understand the phenomenon. Respect the evidence. Prepare wisely. And never allow fear to replace clear thinking.

A Note on Forecasts and Regional Impacts

A forecast of a strong El Niño does not mean that every country will experience the same effects or that a particular disaster is inevitable. Regional outcomes depend on several interacting climate and local factors. For India, including Chennai, readers should also consult the latest regional forecasts and warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The purpose of this article is to explain the science, distinguish established facts from speculation, and encourage informed preparedness rather than unnecessary fear.
